IFIP President, Anthony Wong has appointed Professor Christian Clason (Austria) as the new chair of IFIP TC7 ‘System Modelling and Optimization’ (TC7).
The appointment, for an initial three-year term, began on 14 August 2024 after recommendations from TC7. Mr Wong and the IFIP community wish Professor Clason a successful and productive term as chair.
Professor Clason received his PhD in mathematics at the Technical University of Munich and then moved to the University of Graz as a postdoc and then Assistant Professor. After receiving his habilitation, he moved to the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2014 as a Professor for Inverse Problems. In 2021, he returned to the University of Graz as a Professor of Mathematical Optimization. His research focus is on nonsmooth and PDE-constrained optimization and on inverse problems for partial differential equations; his mathematical interests cover functional analysis, optimization, stochastics, and numerical analysis.
Before being appointed as TC7 chair, he served as founding chair of WG 7.4 “Inverse Problems and Imaging” and as vice-chair of TC 7. Furthermore, he cares deeply about Open Access and Open Science, serving as Founding and Managing Editor of the Diamond Open Access “Journal on Nonsmooth Analysis and Optimization”.
