Congratulations to the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), which this month celebrated 50 years since its foundation on 4th March, 1975.

The society held a special Open Day on 4th March this year to commemorate the anniversary and over 150 guests joined the festivities. A feature of the event was Heinz Zemanek’s Mailüfterl – the first fully transistorized computer on the European mainland. Using VR headsets, visitors explored the legendary Mailüfterl computer, which is on display at the Vienna Technical Museum.

A presentation by the TU Informatics eduLABA scavenger hunt, developed and adapted by the OCG, explored key concepts in computer science, its history and current trends. As a reward for some of the challenging tasks, there was a sweet surprise at the end with a huge birthday cake.

In mini-workshops, visitors experimented with artificial intelligence or practised computational thinking using tasks from the Beaver Computer Science competition. At the IT Security Working Group station , visitors tested their ability to outsmart the AI.

OCG will also mark its anniversary year with a special celebration ceremony on 21st May in the Kuppelsaal of the TU Wien. For more information, visit the website.
