A special conference to commemorate 20 years of Internet access in Serbia was held in the congress hall of the University of Belgrade in February – the same hall where the introduction of internet was first announced in 1996.

Attendees were greeted by the highest representatives of the University of Belgrade and Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, and among the speakers were some of the original actors who shaped the events which took place 20 years ago.

On the 27th of February 1996, the Belgrade University Computer Centre (RCUB) in cooperation with internet service provider BeoTelNet connected the Academic Network to the Internet, marking the beginning of the Internet-era in Serbia. The capacity of the first Internet connection of the Academic Network was only 64 kbps.
