IFIP WG 8.3 (Decision Support) and WG 12.15 (Generative AI) joined forces for their 2026 Joint Open Conference, held from 8-10 June at University College Cork in Ireland.
WG 8.3 has a long-standing tradition of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on decision support systems, particularly how information systems and technology can enhance human effectiveness in complex and uncertain situations. As IFIP’s newest Working Group, WG 12.15 brought a strong focus on the opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI.
The joint conference extended the legacy of WG 8.3 into the age of AI at a time when decision-making is increasingly shaped by complex, dynamic and uncertain environments. In this context, decision support systems have a critical role to play, not simply in automating tasks but in augmenting human judgement, fostering collaboration and supporting sense-making in situations that cannot be fully specified in advance.
Reflecting these priorities, the conference theme was Human-Centric Decision Making: Transforming With AI. The event attracted a strong selection of high-quality papers and featured keynote presentations, a panel discussion on generative AI, social events and a dedicated generative AI workshop presented by an industry partner.
