The IFIP IP3 Global Industry Council (GIC) serves as the principal forum for employers and educators to engage with IP3 and shape the global ICT profession. Each month, they feature relevant and insightful ideas in IFIP Insights. This month, GIC director Eliezer Manor unpacks Regenerative AI, the term he coined to describe the interactive and iterative process between a human being, with human intelligence, and Generative AI. He describes how he applies Regenerative AI with his MBA students in the ideation process of defining a creative new idea for hi-tech entrepreneurship.

The objective of this initiative is to use generative AI to assist, accelerate and improve the human innovation process.

Generative AI jas quickly became a standard tool to use AI, large sources of data and fast access to the data, to receive comprehensive information on almost any topic one can think about!

We coined the term Regenerative AI to describe an interactive and iterative process between a human being, with human intelligence, and Generative AI, for the ideation process of defining a creative new idea for hi-tech entrepreneurship.  For this purpose, we developed a simple procedure consisting of a sequence of converging human questions answered by Generative AI.

This technique can be used for many other creative purposes, because basically it consists of regenerative hybridization between computer AI (of highest IQ) and Human Emotional Intelligence, with its unique EQ.  The suggested process is finally controlled by the human.

We will emphasize below the use of this technique to teach and train young students (in our case MBA students) in classes of innovative and creative thinking to ideate and crystallize an idea of developing a novel product for the market using advanced technologies; in other words: hi-tech entrepreneurship.

Content

The workshop will address:

  1. Techniques on how to initiate an innovative idea – the ideation phase, using a novel approach, based on Regenerative AI – a new approach.   The concept and its implementation were developed for MBA and Engineering students from several colleges in Israel and tested on them.   Its basics consist of hybridization/convolution between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Intelligence (HI), taking advantage of the recent accelerated development of AI.

The process of regenerative AI is achieved by pro-active interaction with feedback between generative AI (Chat GPT) and HI – personal Human Cognitive/Emotional Intelligence.

  1. Guided training to achieve the ideation phase for the development of a new hi-tech product or service
  2. Crystallizing the idea by defining, specifying and evaluating the new product or service
  3. Virtual testing of the POC conceptual design and evaluation of the POC prototype for its practicality.
  4. Presentation of the new product or service by addressing all relevant aspects, by preparing the following documents:
    1. A structured ppt presentation
    2. An appropriate Executive Summary
    3. An Elevator Pitch
    4. An initial specification and conceptual design of a POC prototype

The ppt presentation is finally prepared by the student to be carried out using the “virtual agent” technique (based again on generative AI).

Description of the initial process for ideation

This is the most important process, because it is of creative nature, not deterministic.  Guided training is provided.

The process starts with a basic and simple question of curiosity initiated by the student, after a short training on 10 different techniques, addressing possible stimulating sources to get into this state-of-mind.  For example, after looking around and observing nature: “Why the leaves of plants are green?”

This initial question is asked by the student to Generative AI (like Chat GPT), which provides a detailed initial structured answer.

A routine of questions asked by the student is generated, when consecutive questions are asked by the student in a creative and iterative personal way, based on the last answer of Chat GPT.    The routine is continued, until the idea for an innovative product or service is reached by the student to his/her satisfaction.

This procedure converges fast, based on the instant answers provided by the generative AI and on the intelligent iterative questions asked by the trained student.

The above routine sequence is repeated several times, each time starting with a different simple curiosity question initiated by the student, and the ideas are analysed and rated by the student under guidance

Implementation

The workshop will be performed in the following way:

  1. About 6 lectures (of 1.5 hours each) to all participants (frontal or by Zoom), emphasizing:
    1. The characterization and the different aspects of innovation and hi-tech entrepreneurship
    2. The character, the spirit and the nature of the hi-tech entrepreneur
    3. Detailed presentation and analysis of 10 different techniques for ideation
    4. Guidance for preparation of the documents with templates and live examples around a certain case
    5. Homework accompanied by guided personal one-on-one training (by Zoom) and class discussions/analysis
    6. Techniques used for final presentation of the proposed innovative product/service, using the ppt and the POC design
  2. Interactive discussions with the class
  3. Description of the personal homework to be executed and submitted by the participants between the lectures
  4. Personal on-demand on-line Zoom interactive discussions with each participant around preparation, correction and improvement of the homework (the 4 documents).   An average of about 3-5 personal discussions are expected with each participant
  5. Presentation of each project (for the development of the new product or procedure) by the inventor in front of all the class and invitees.
  6. Evaluation process of the innovative ideas and the proposed new products, using a group of designated judges.

Outcome

At the end of the workshop, the graduate students will be equipped with the motivation and with the appropriate tools to initiate, crystallize, design and present a new innovative product or service, using advanced technologies.

Appendix: Specific example of the ideation process

I will present a specific example to see the convergence process in a particular case:

  1. Start with a first curiosity question to Chat GPT: Why are the leaves green?

Answer – From the answer we can learn about:

  1. Chlorophyl and spectral light absorption, which makes the leaves look green.
  2. The role of the photosynthesis
  3. The plant is a chemical/biological reactor which converts light energy into chemical energy to fuel their growth, using glucose.
  1. Second question to Chat GPT: What is chlorophyl?

Answer – From the answer we can learn about:

  1. The functionality of chlorophyl
  2. The task of chlorophyl for photosynthesis, which produces oxygen O2 out of CO2 – carbon dioxide.
  1. Third question to Chat GPT: What is photosynthesis?

Answer – From the answer we can learn about:

  1. This process is #1 producer of oxygen in the atmosphere.
  2. The importance of the photosynthesis:
    1. Is the energy source for plants, generating glucose.
    2. Production of oxygen
    3. Carbon dioxide removal from atmosphere.

Insight:  Looking on the findings of removing and using CO2 to generate O2, the idea was that we may think about imitating the natural process to industrialize it, as an answer to the SDG related to climate change caused by the large emissions of CO2 in our atmosphere.

  1. Fourth question to Chat GPT: Is the photosynthesis process fully understood and industrialized/commercialized?

Answer: Not yet.   Attempts are being made, but the efficiency is still low.   There is room to improve.  For this purpose, we must understand why the attempts failed on the efficiency and what the meaning of it is, because we have enormous sources of light.
