Professor Max Bramer has retired from IFIP after an extraordinary 47 years of service, marked by a special award presentation at the recent IFIP General Assembly (GA).
Well known to many in the IFIP community, Max has held numerous leadership roles over the decades. Most recently, he served as IFIP Honorary Secretary from 2019 until the close of the 2025 GA. He was Vice-President from 2013 to 2019, a Councillor from 2008 to 2013, and a member of the GA from 2003 to 2025. He also sat on the IFIP Board and Executive Committee from 2008 to 2025 and chaired TC12 (Artificial Intelligence) from 2003 to 2009. In recognition of his contributions, he received the IFIP Silver Core in 2010.
During the GA, Immediate Past President Anthony Wong presented Max with the IFIP trophy in recognition of more than two decades of service as a GA member. Max also gave a fascinating review of his journey with IFIP, reflecting on nearly five decades of involvement.
Beyond IFIP, Max is Emeritus Professor of Information Technology at the University of Portsmouth, UK and has served in senior academic, research and industry positions, including Head of Department of Information Science at Portsmouth and Programme Manager at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. He is a Chartered Fellow of the BCS, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
A prolific author, his publications include Principles of Data Mining, Logic Programming with Prolog and Artificial Intelligence: An International Perspective, among many others.
