IFIP is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Dr Mária Raffai, a distinguished member of the Hungarian and international computing communities and a long-standing contributor to IFIP.
Mária served as IFIP Honorary Secretary from 2010 to 2014 and as an IFIP Councillor from 2014 to 2020. During these years, she worked tirelessly to strengthen international scientific relationships and cooperation across our global community. Her expertise, dedication and high academic standards earned her the respect of colleagues around the world.
A Professor Emerita at Széchenyi István University in Győr, Hungary, Mária made significant contributions to information systems, software development, business informatics education and the preservation of the history of Hungarian computing.
She also played a prominent role in the professional activities of the John von Neumann Society, representing Hungary within IFIP for a decade. Through her work as an academic, researcher, educator and organiser, and her commitment to sharing international developments in the field, she had a profound influence on new generations of professionals in both academic and corporate environments.
Mária’s outstanding professional service was recognised through numerous honours, including the IFIP Internal Service Award in 2010.
She leaves an exemplary and enduring legacy. Her energy, work ethic, warmth and cheerfulness will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with her.
We extend our sincere condolences to Mária’s family, friends and colleagues. Her contribution to IFIP and the wider computing community will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
