The international ICT community is mourning the loss of Nikola Marković, President of the Informatics Association of Serbia (IAS), who passed away in Belgrade on 10 July 2026.
One of Serbia’s technology pioneers and among the country’s most respected ICT leaders, Nikola dedicated more than five decades to advancing IT development and application. His vision, leadership and unwavering belief that technology and knowledge should serve people left an enduring mark on Serbia’s digital transformation and inspired generations of ICT professionals.
As Director of the Belgrade Institute for Informatics, Nikola oversaw the development of the city’s information system, recognised as one of Europe’s most advanced during the 1970s. He later served as Director of the Federal Institute for Informatics, where he guided the development of the national information system. He was also among the key figures behind the introduction of the Internet in Serbia and served as administrator of the country’s .gov domain.
Beyond his leadership roles, Nikola was a passionate educator, mentor and advocate for the ICT profession. He taught generations of ICT professionals and authored hundreds of professional articles, consistently championing the role of digitalisation in advancing society. Even after his retirement, he remained an active volunteer and leader of IAS, bringing together the ICT community, encouraging young professionals and promoting the continued development of the information society.
With his passing, Serbia has lost one of its most distinguished ICT pioneers. His legacy will endure through the systems he helped build, the profession he helped shape, and the countless individuals whose careers and lives he influenced.
