A former Vice Chair of Working Group 9.2 on Social Accountability, Dr Chris Zielinski has been inducted into the IPv6 Hall of Fame (http://www.ipv6halloffame.org/) as an early commentator on IPv6. His paper on the Social and Ethical Aspects of IPv6 (https://doi.org/10.1007/0-387-31168-8_19) appeared in 2006 in the IFIP Series publication entitled, “The Information Society: Emerging Landscapes”, edited by Zielinski, Duquenoy and Kimppa.
Prepared with input from Vint Cerf, Chris’s paper this was among the first to reflect on the broad social and ethical issues connected with the expansion of the name space from IPv4 to IPv6, which represents the cornerstone of the massive expansion of the Internet of Things – and of the internet generally in everyone’s lives. Just how good or bad is this incursion of digital technology into our social and biological universe continues to be an ongoing matter for concern and discussion.
The official induction of this year’s selected candidates into the IPv6 Hall of Fame takes place in December 2024.
In relation to the ethical and social aspects, we look forward to a revival of interest and agenda in IFIP Working Group 9.2 on Social Accountability under its new leadership of Professor Gordon of the University of Hull, U.K. See the separate announcement calling for input and ideas.
