The Interaction Design and International Development (IDID) Conference, held jointly with India HCI 2024, took place from 7-9 November 2024, in Mumbai, India. Organised by IFIP Working Group 13.8, this conference provided a platform for researchers and practitioners from around the globe to explore advancements in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a focus on international development.
The 2024 theme, “Designing for Tomorrow: Innovation and Equity in Global Interaction Design”, highlighted the need for equitable and inclusive solutions in interaction design. This theme was reflected in contributions from academia and industry, fostering dialogue around the challenges and opportunities to design for developing regions and emerging economies.
A keynote by Professor Judy van Biljon from the University of South Africa (Unisa) was one of the conference’s standout moments. Her talk, “Theorisation as Beneficiation in Interaction Design and International Development: A Global South Perspective,” emphasised the importance of localised approaches to HCI and the role of context in equitable design practices. The conference program featured full papers, posters & demos and student design competitions.
IDID created a space for cross-cultural collaboration and innovation, furthering the agenda of designing for a more inclusive future. It successfully brought together researchers and practitioners to strengthen connections within the HCI community and foster innovations that drive inclusive design practices.
