ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient, Geoffrey Hinton has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics along with John J. Hopfield, “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”.

Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data, and so perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in pictures.

Hinton received the 2018 A.M. Turing Award with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing.  Learn more here.
