The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has new leadership after elections in December and January.

Evelina Slavcheva was elected President of BAS by the organisation’s IX General Assembly on 2nd December 2024. Follow up elections on 20th January 2025 resulted in DSc Evdokia Pasheva, Professor DSc Emmanuel Moutafov and Professor DSc Shtelian Shterionov all being elevated to Vice President while Professor Dr Neli Koseva became the new Scientific Secretary-General.

Professor Slavcheva is the first women to serve as President in the Academy’s 155-year history. Her career has focused in the areas of electrochemical materials science, corrosion and corrosion protection, electrochemical sensorics and electrochemical functional stimulation. She previously served two terms as President of the BAS General Assembly, was the Director of the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems of BAS (IEES), and is the founder and head of the “Hydrogen systems with polymer electrolyte” section at IEES, heading up 23 scientific research projects.

In accepting the election result, Professor Slavcheva thanked her colleagues for their support and stressed that the hard work was just beginning. “Only all of us together can continue the successful path of the Academy,” she said, promising every effort to make this happen.

IFIP President Anthony Wong congratulated the new BAS President on her election success. “I look forward to working closely with Evelina and her team to further our mutual goals and to promote the professional and socially responsible development and application of technology,” he said.
