IFIP’s Immediate Past President Anthony Wong represented IFIP at the inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance on 10 July 2026, continuing IFIP’s active engagement in international discussions on AI governance and digital policy.
The Dialogue brought together representatives from 170 Member States, alongside leaders from industry, academia, civil society and the technical community, marking a significant step in international efforts to develop collaborative approaches to AI governance.
Opening the Dialogue, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the gathering as a defining moment in shaping the future of AI governance. His call for governments and stakeholders to move beyond discussion towards collective action set the tone for a day focused on developing practical frameworks for the responsible governance of AI.
The event explored approaches that promote innovation while ensuring AI is deployed responsibly, transparently and in ways that serve the public interest. Discussions highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing governance, safety, interoperability, capacity building and inclusive participation, recognising that the opportunities and challenges presented by AI extend beyond national borders.
The preliminary report of the UN Expert Panel emphasised the need for governance approaches that balance technological innovation with human rights, equity and sustainability, while strengthening global collaboration and ensuring developing nations, local communities and Indigenous Peoples are able to participate meaningfully in shaping the future of AI.
Reflecting on the significance of the Dialogue, Anthony Wong welcomed the United Nations’ focus on collaborative action.

Anthony also highlighted the importance of translating dialogue into meaningful outcomes.
“The stakes could not be higher. The choices we make now will determine whether AI becomes a force for equity, sustainability and human rights, or a source of unchecked risk. It is time to move from words to action.”
The outcomes of the inaugural Dialogue are expected to contribute to the development of a shared international approach to AI governance, helping to guide the responsible advancement of AI while protecting communities and the broader public interest.
