The AI for Good Global Summit (AI4GGS) 2025 took place in Geneva from 8-11 July 2025 in Palexpo, Geneva, which was co-hosting the WSIS meeting attended by IFIP. Pierre Morel of IFIP Working Group 9.2 shares his experience of AI4GGS 2025:

  • The summit was the opportunity to showcase the launch of the AI Standards Exchange (https://aiforgood.itu.int/ai-standards-exchange/) in collaboration with ITU, ISO, IEEE, IEC and other partners.
  • The summit highlighted the need for governance, and for it to be truly inclusive. The AI governance dialogue brought together more than 200 leaders. It was “a conversation together with countries that are just getting started on their AI journey so that together we can start to chart a path towards inclusive AI governance” (Doreen Bogdan Martin, ITU Secretary General – 11 July 2025)
  • Discussions included the necessity to include ethical societal, environmental and economic considerations in AI governance and standardisation. (“AI international standards should consider not only technical aspects, but also societal challenges” Sung Hwan Cho – AI for Good 11 July 2025)
  • The Summit also presented a multitude of cases in robotics, AI awareness for the young, agentic AI and much more. The key speeches are transcribed and available: https://dig.watch/event/ai-for-good-global-summit-2025

As a non-specialist visitor, I was struck by how much AI has progressed, but also by the gap between AI potential applications and the readiness of organisations and users at large to truly benefit from them while considering ethical impacts. That gap in operationalisation is a challenge for most stakeholders and should shape developments ahead.
