ACM Releases Tech Brief on Safer Algorithmic Systems
ACM’s Technology Policy Council released “ACM TechBrief: Safer Algorithmic Systems.” The TechBrief highlights the fact that the ubiquity of algorithmic systems creates serious risks that are not being adequately addressed. The key conclusions of the TechBrief are: (1) to promote safer algorithmic systems, research is needed on both human-centered and technical software development methods, improved testing, audit trails, and monitoring mechanisms, as well as training and governance; (2) building organisational safety cultures requires management leadership, focus in hiring and training, adoption of safety-related practices, and continuous attention; and (3) internal and independent human-centered oversight mechanisms, both within government and organisations, are necessary to promote safer algorithmic systems.
ACM’s Europe Policy Group Comments on EC Cyber Resilience Consultation
ACM Europe’s Technology Policy Committee recently responded to a detailed “radio button” questionnaire and supplemented its selections with several key written points, These include: endorsing the promotion of secure-by-design and secure-by-default engineering approaches; warning of an increased likelihood of state actors, or their proxies, using cyber-attacks; urging the development of secure-by-design principles specific to machine learning systems; the importance horizontal cybersecurity requirements at a European level; and that risk-based assessments should be conducted in all EU Member States by competent national authorities.

ACM Europe Call for Proposals for Seasonal Schools 2023
The ACM Europe Council invites proposals for the organization of seasonal schools in 2023 under the ACM Europe umbrella in keeping with the successful summer school series on HPC and Data Science. Proposals will be evaluated based on the educational merits and organizational and financial plans. The submission deadline is 10 March, 2023. Notifications will be given on 10 April, 2023.
