SEARCC and CSSL Host the Largest ICT Event Ever Held in Sri Lanka

 

Monday 25 September 2017 – SEARCC/NITC 2017 combined the regional SEARCC conference and Sri Lanka’s National IT Conference (NITC), drawing delegates from across Asia, the Pacific and Europe.

The conference was hosted by the Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL), whose exemplary management of the event set a new standard for future years. CSSL also hosted the General Assembly of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) during the same period.

The large number of international and local speakers’ expert contributions enlightened the many delegates from across Sri Lanka, the region and the world during the two day conference. There was attendance from over 50 economies and all continents except Antarctica.

The conference showcased the considerable achievements of leading ICT professionals from many economies across the region, who were recognised globally through the International SEARCC awards for:

  • ICT Professional of the Year,
  • ICT Educator of the Year, and
  • ICT Researcher of the Year.

Future ICT professionals were also honoured through the SEARCC International Schools Software Competition (ISSC), which attracted teams from across Asia and the Pacific. The winning team for 2017 came from the Republic of China (Taiwan). 

SEARCC Secretary General, Yohan Ramasundara, congratulated CSSL for hosting Sri Lanka’s largest ICT event, building on the SEARCC platform as an active member in the Asia Pacific region.

“SEARCC continues to strengthen the ICT profession during the fourth industrial revolution enabled by advancement and innovation in technology,” he said.

As is customary, the conference concluded with the transfer of the Presidency to the SEARCC member society hosting the conference. In accepting the Presidency of SEARCC, Yasas Abeywickrama said he, “strongly supports current strategies to increase SEARCC’s presence in the region”.

The next SEARCC conference will be hosted by the Computer Society of India (CSI) in 2018.

 About SEARCC:  

The concept of a regional computer confederation grew out of the first regional computer conference held in Singapore in September 1976 under the auspices of the International Federation for Information Processing and implemented by the Singapore Computer Society. The Charter and Constitution of SEARCC was signed in Singapore on 28 February 1978. Six national societies from the region, the Hong Kong Computer Society, Indonesian Computer Society, Malaysian National Computer Confederation, Philippines Computer Society, Singapore Computer Society and Computer Association of Thailand were the founding signatories. Australian Computer Society (ACS), Computer Society of Republic of China (CSROC), Computer Society of India (CSI), South Pacific Computer Society (SPaCS), Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC), Papua New Guinea, are also among the SEARCC Executive Committee members. SEARCC, today, is the leading confederation of IT professionals throughout the region.
